First Foot Forward Big Buttery Barrique Chardonnay 2019

About two years ago Marty Seibert (Tokar and First Foot Forward winemaker) was in for a Friday night tasting and so as we were discussing chardonnay styles (and I don’t know how) but somehow I managed to talk him into letting a barrel of chardonnay go through full malolactic ferment. For people who don’t have a wine-making degree that means it’s going to be soft, buttery and smooth. It’s a single barrel of hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented in 2 year old barrel, stirred monthly, zero additions Yarra Valley chardonnay with the most gorgeous creamy mouthfeel that you will find anywhere. Wild yeast, wild malolactic bacteria and minimum preservative added at bottling.

There is a wonderful bouquet of baked peach and butter balanced alongside lime, grapefruit and cashew notes. The palate has the loveliest creamy texture with a long line of balanced acidity keeping it fresh. There is richness to the wine without being bulky or clumsy. After a second or so an oatmeal note joins the array of citrus and baked peach notes come in late. Classy, complex, full bodied, balanced and supple. People kept asking for proper big old fashioned chardonnay so we did it. Tastes really good too!
